Artist’s Note: There was this wise and humorous character of a person— an old French woman who would say this phrase that I didn’t fully understand and I translated it to mean “What will ensue?” (Maybe Qu’est-ce qui s’ensuivra?…I don’t know). I think back to that time, and I even think not having clarity on the translation itself adds to the meaning. I wonder about her life- this grandmother-aged woman was still living life, adding a hint of innocent mischief to everything, and yet she seemed wise and trusting of life. Over time, I’ve pondered this phrase. I think in the journey of life, part of the wonder is about not knowing and celebrating the mystery as part of the fun.

After I decided to name this piece Ensue (because I don’t trust my memory or my French), I then was inspired by the word itself and thought about how sometimes we do know exactly what will ensue…for example, when we spend time with an old friend and we know: for sure there will be hours of laughter. I love how this piece can speak to both sides of the word, and it’s really about making sure that we add merriment to whatever it is that will come to pass.
